Morag McGee
My most recent body of work has taken inspiration from the working
people of the North East of Scotland and my home town of Peterhead.
I was able to research a range of people who worked and still work at the
quayside and around the North East Coast. I collect sketches and take
notes back to my studio where I work on creating a range of figures.
I work in earthenware paperclay which allows me to create very delicate,
paper thin surfaces on my pieces, if you look closely, you may be able to
catch a few words in Doric written on the figures.
Working in paperclay also allows me the freedom to make spontaneous
decisions when making and personalities of individual figures are created
by essentially 'drawing' with the clay.
I also use a porcelain paperclay mixture for my Doric Delftware. Focussing
on simpler, more functional forms allows me to concentrate on the
composition of Doric words on the surface of the porcelain; the fluid forms
can be both humorous and playful. Due to the high firing temperature of
the clay, these pieces seem very delicate but are deceptively strong.
Overall, my work is based on my perspective, memories and experience of
growing up in the North East of Scotland.
